I’m sure you know how important what you eat is to your body, but did you also know that it’s just as important for clear, healthy skin?  Yep, in the same way that eating too much fast food, salty, high sodium, and processed food is bad for your figure…it’s also bad for your face.  So here are 5 tips for what to eat (and what not to eat), if healthy, glowing skin is on your list of “must haves” this season.

  1. Avoid the “I” in “Iodine”.  The main reason foods trigger acne is due to dietary iodine. In addition to fast food, high saturated fat, and fried foods, sodas, sports drinks, and many condiments are high in iodine and sodium so try to cut out as many of these as possible from your daily diet.
  2. Eat water soluble foods. Wrinkle-fighting, antioxidant rich foods high in their own natural water content, like fruits and vegetables, hydrate your skin naturally. Foods containing healthy fats (like most nuts, foods  with Omega-3’s, extra virgin olive oil, and delicious avocados) also have the same benefits of hydration.
  3. Drink lots of lemon water. In shooting for drinking your weight in ounces of water, try adding lemon to your H2O. The enzymes in the lemons help support healthier liver function.  This then helps to flush out toxins and waste from your body, resulting in less acne and more radiant skin.
  4. Add more color to your diet. Foods that are bright and rich in color have more phytochemicals in them, (think rich dark colored leafy greens, bright colored red/green peppers, bright orange or yellow squash, etc.) Many of these phytochemicals are antioxidants (natural chemicals that are thought to protect against harmful substances called free radicals) so they are beneficial both to your body’s organs, and your skin.
  5. Cut out (or control) dairy intake.  Milk does not always do a body good.  Certain skin issues may be related to how much dairy you consume. Many types of dairy, like milk and cheese, have high amounts of hormones in them that can throw our own hormone levels off balance when we consume too much dairy.  Try cashew or almond milk, or dairy free items instead, and you’ll notice a difference in your skin.
